FORTISSIMO,
SONG FESTIVAL UNDER 14
DIAGRAMS FOR SECTION A - AUTHORS IN THE CLASS
The organization
provides five original musical pieces, among which the participants
may choose which (one or many) to write lyrics to. The participants
may enter lyrics to one or more pieces among the five available,
or even more than one set of lyrics for the same piece.
Diagrams are available for each of the five musical pieces: (1)
a block diagram, useful for kids and teachers who are not musical
experts to understand the structure of the song, and (2) a guide
diagram with boxes to aid in the creation of the lyrics, where each
box corresponds to a note of the melody, and the length of the box
represents the duration of the note. This guide diagram, besides
graphically explaining the structure of the melody in a simple and
intuitive way, helps the kids in the creation of the lyrics, enabling
them to associate in a clear way the syllables of text themselves
with the notes of the melody.
Some
suggestions for understanding the structure of the song and for
planning its contents:
In the proposed
diagrams, the verses which are not denoted with letters, and those
denoted by the same letter (e.g., Verse A), have the same melodic
structure. The text, however, can be freely created differently
each time at the discretion of the writers.
Phase 1:
Deciding upon the subject of the text of the song, inspired by the
given themes (Life, love, and nature).
Phase 2:
Development of the subject in a narrative broken down into sections
(verses) and the development of a relevant phrase to be a lyrical
and thoughtful moment for the chorus.
Phase 3:
Creation and adaption of the text to the melodic structure of the
song (syllable/note) for which it is possible to use the Guide Diagram
for the writing of the text.
Some
suggestions for creating the lyrics:
Each box of
the proposed guide diagram corresponds to a note of the song, and
the length of the box represents the duration of the note.
The diagrams may be used as tools to analyse and comprehend the
melodic structure and rhythm of the piece, and as a tool to test
the lyrics.
Each box may contain one syllable or the prolonging of the syllable
of the box preceding it (vocalism).
A box can also contain two syllables when the final vowel of the
first box can be merged with the initial vowel of the second (example.:
fan-no_al-za-re).
The vertical dotted lines in grey in the background indicate the
succession of musical measures.
Each horizontal row of boxes corresponds to a musical phrase of
four measures.
The boxes that begin below an odd-numbered column (particularly
columns 1 and 5) should preferably contain an accented (stressed)
syllable.
A box that begins under an even-numbered column and continues beyond
it can contain stressed or un-stressed syllables.
Regarding the arrangement of the stressed syllables of text in relation
to the musical rhythm, some exceptions can be easily made with regard
to a particular poetic-musical idea.
